Character Boats Whammel (2006)
Price £12,500 Tarka including trailer
A  very capable family open day boat that is ideal for coastal sailing or days on the river.
Easy to own, go anywhere with traditional looks that are often admired

Character Boats produce this beautiful, bullet-proof, traditional looking, open day boat. The craft is based on the Morecambe Bay Whammel which was originally a salmon fishing boat originating from the River Lune in North West England. The design was perfected over 150 years in its use by these original fisher folk. The modern GRP hull has plenty of in built buoyancy which makes this a very stable and seaworthy boat.

It is an ideal boat for single handed exploration around coastline and estuaries. It is great fun to sail and in a blow will pick up its skirts and really move but always maintaining that confident bight on the water. The shoal draft, with long shallow keel with its low loading designed trailer makes it easy to launch and recover from the beach or shallow water, river or lake side.

If you want to introduce your family to sailing this is great boat, one that you sit in with reassuring safe cockpit and comfortable seating.

Tarka is really two boats in one. It has been sailed and also much enjoyed as a day boat on the river. It comes with a forward canvas cockpit that is easily raised or lowered, a large rudder for easy low speed  work and plenty of seating for the family and friends (up to 8) and stowage space for picnics and camping.

It has had a new mast fitted about 6 years ago, also new anchor and has bronze Wykham-Martin furling gear for the jib. Tarka  has been well maintained, and much loved  being cleaned and serviced each year since the current owner bought it in 2012. This boat is C17-06 and as an early example built in 2006 it is one of the few Whammel built with the optional lifting centre plate which gives extra directional stability in beating to windward.
