Description

Fair Alton is a unique boat, as we understand it being the only one built by McGruer to this design. It has been designed to appeal to perhaps yachtsmen and women who appreciate the beauty of a traditional wooden yacht, with strong well built construction but who now want the convenience, and ease of handling of a powered cabin cruiser.

We consider the boat to be in excellent condition throughout as can be seen from the internal photographs. The present owner over the last three and a half years, has lavished many thousands of hours to bring the boat up to this excellent condition.

The twin engines have been well maintained and are reported by the owner as economical to run and in A1 condition. The engines were originally bought new in 2001 and have approximately 900 hours on the clock. The engines have been recently and regularly serviced and new alternators fitted.

There are three electric bilge pumps, 2 of which are on float switches and the third on a manual switch and this arrangement is backed up by a large manual bilge pump.

Fair Alton has twin helming positions one external high up with very good all round visibility and all dials and controls easy to hand. A second foul weather helm position is inside the central wheel house cabin.

We believe the price of the vessel is realistic for the current market and represents a significant discount on the surveyors estimate of £95,000, which is testament to the quality and condition of this vessel.

The vessel is currently lies afloat in a marina and is available for viewing. It is ready for this season and should provide many years of very pleasurable ownership.

History

Fair Alton was built in 1972 at the McGruer boat yard at Clynder, which is on the western shore of lake Gareloch in Scotland.  The cabin cruiser holds yard no 633. McGruer was one of Scotland's most famous large boatyards that specialised in wooden racing yachts, such as 8 Metre cruiser racers, Dragons, and the 28' Island class boats with a history that started in the 18th Century and continued through to 2001 when it finally closed. The Yard had a distinguished reputation for building high quality yachts and significant record of innovation in production methods.

Construction

The builder has used the best methods and materials throughout. The hull is constructed of carvel mahogany planking on oak timbers. 1" mahogany planking laid on oak timbers and fastened by copper boat nails clenched on roves.   The planking was strengthened at the bilge and sheer strake.

The steam bent oak timbers are 2 inch x 2 inch on 11.4 inch centres, the beam shelf was 4.7 inch by 1.5 inch 9 mm x 40 mm and the deck beams were 2 inch x 2 inch on 11.4 inch centres.
